Rewriting History Through Theatre: “Paanch Kanyayen” Shines at KPS Kadma 2025

Triumph on Stage: “Paanch Kanyayen” Shines at Inter-College Youth Competition 2025 The stage came alive with powerful storytelling, raw emotion, and cultural depth at the Inter-College Youth Competition 2025 hosted by Kerala Public School, Kadma, Jamshedpur. Among the many remarkable performances, our one-act play “Paanch Kanyayen”, directed by Prem Sharma, stood out as a compelling theatrical masterpiece—earning us the First Prize in Theatre Production. A Story Rooted in History, Told Through Women’s Voices “Paanch Kanyayen” explores the untold emotional and psychological journeys of tribal women in the aftermath of the Mahabharata war. While the epic traditionally focuses on kings, warriors, and divine interventions, our play shifts the narrative lens toward marginalized voices—women who bore the silent consequences of war. Through evocative performances, the play delves into themes of loss, resilience, identity, and survival. It reflects how these women, often overlooked in grand narratives, carried the burden of rebuilding life amidst devastation. A Vision Brought to Life Under the direction of Prem Sharma, the production blended traditional storytelling with contemporary theatrical techniques. The use of minimalistic props, tribal music, and expressive choreography added authenticity and emotional depth to the performance. The actors brought intensity and sincerity to their roles, making the audience feel every moment—from grief and despair to strength and hope. A Prestigious Platform The Inter-College Youth Competition 2025 witnessed participation from more than 8 Kerala Public School branches across Jharkhand, making it a highly competitive and prestigious event. Each team brought unique creativity and passion, but “Paanch Kanyayen” managed to leave a lasting impression on both judges and audience. A Proud Achievement Winning the First Prize in Theatre Production was not just a victory—it was a celebration of teamwork, creativity, and the power of meaningful storytelling. The recognition has motivated us to continue exploring impactful themes and pushing artistic boundaries. Promoting Theatre in Jharkhand This achievement also highlights the growing theatre culture in Jharkhand. Platforms like these encourage young artists to express themselves and bring regional stories to the forefront. Maut Kyu Raat Bhar Nahi Aati — A Night of Theatre in Ghatsila

Maut Kyu Raat Bhar Nahi Aati — A Night of Theatre in Ghatsila Date: 28 March 2024Location: Ghatsila, JharkhandDirector: Prem Sharma Theatre has always been a mirror—sometimes reflecting society, sometimes exposing the uncomfortable truths we try to ignore. On the evening of 28th March 2024 in Ghatsila, the stage came alive with Maut Kyu Raat Bhar Nahi Aati, a powerful theatrical performance directed by Prem Sharma. The play unfolded like a psychological storm, blending dark humor, philosophical reflection, and raw human emotions. The Essence of the Play The title itself echoes a famous poetic idea—“maut ka ek din muayyan hai, neend kyun raat bhar nahi aati”—which questions human anxiety about death and existence. Maut Kyu Raat Bhar Nahi Aati explores the internal struggle of a man haunted by guilt, morality, and existential dread. The narrative follows a protagonist who strangely longs for death but is forced instead to confront the weight of his own conscience and past choices. The play becomes less about death itself and more about the fear, irony, and absurdity of life. Stagecraft and Atmosphere The Ghatsila performance transformed a simple stage into an intense emotional landscape. Hanging microphones, minimal furniture, and dramatic lighting created a surreal space where every dialogue felt amplified. The actors used the stage brilliantly—sometimes whispering philosophical questions, sometimes erupting into emotional confrontations. The tension between the characters reflected the internal conflict that forms the core of the play. Moments of silence carried as much weight as the dialogues themselves. Direction by Prem Sharma Director Prem Sharma approached the play with striking restraint. Instead of overwhelming the audience with elaborate sets, he focused on performance, rhythm, and emotional timing. written by Pratap Sehgal. The result was a performance where every movement mattered—every pause carried meaning. His direction emphasized the psychological depth of the characters, allowing the audience to experience the protagonist’s turmoil almost intimately. Themes Explored The play touches on several powerful ideas: It asks a haunting question:If death is inevitable, why are we so restless waiting for it? The play answers this not through logic, but through emotion and confrontation. Theatre in Jharkhand Performances like this are vital for strengthening the theatre culture of Jharkhand. Cities and towns like Ghatsila are slowly becoming spaces where independent theatre, storytelling, and artistic experimentation can flourish. Local productions help bring meaningful stories to audiences who rarely get to experience live theatre in smaller towns. About Jharkhand Production Jharkhand Production is actively supporting theatre, creative storytelling, and cultural documentation across the region. Through platforms like jharkhandproduction.com, artists, theatre groups, and filmmakers can showcase their work and reach a wider audience. Conclusion Maut Kyu Raat Bhar Nahi Aati was not just a play—it was an experience that lingered long after the lights went out. In a world constantly distracted by noise, this performance forced the audience to sit with uncomfortable thoughts about life, morality, and mortality. And perhaps that is what good theatre should do.
